Sydney Uni archers travelled out to the Canberra Archery Club this past weekend to compete in the annual Australia Day Weekend Archery Tournament.
Conditions were tough on the range with temperatures reaching a dry 36 degrees for two full days of shooting.
Day 1 was the 144 arrow round where the compound and freestyle recurve divisions shoot 36 arrows at each distance: 90m, 70m, 50m, and 30m. The first two distances are shot at a target 122cm in diameter, and the latter with an 80cm target. Barebow recurve archers would shoot 70m, 60m, 50m, and 30m.
Noah Ashton (20 & Under) came second in the compound division with a score of 1149 out of a possible 1440 points.
Eduardo Delos Reyes (Open) shot freestyle recurve and finished 8th with 1007 points. He was not put off by the fact that he was shooting next to Alec Potts—a bronze medal archer at Rio—and beat his previous PR by 76 points.
Eric Hu (Open) also in the freestyle recurve division had a tougher time, finishing 10th with 648 points.
Jordan Vouroudis (Open), barebow recurve (shooting without sights), claimed silver with 337 points.
Day 2 was matchplay. Archers would shoot a 72 arrow qualifying round to determine rankings, and shoot head-to-head in a knockout tournament. Out of a possible 720 points:
Noah Ashton scored 582 points and was ranked 28th in the compound division. He was knocked out in the first round.
Eduardo Delos Reyes scored 568 points and drew for 12th place in the ranking round for freestyle recurve. He went on to beat Wendell Huang in a one arrow shoot off—archers shoot one arrow each at 70m, closest to the centre of the target wins—to determine the 12th and 13th place ranks with a shot an inch closer to the centre of the target than Huang’s. Delos Reyes came back from 0 – 4 set points down after two sets, to win his first round match against Hao He 6 – 4 in 5 sets. His second match against Alex King was another close one, down 1 – 3 after two sets, but took it to 5 sets and won 6 – 4. Delos Reyes held his own against current NSW team representative James Johnstone in the quarter final, by taking the match to a 5th and final set, but was eliminated 7 – 3.
Eric Hu scored 245 and was ranked 21st in freestyle recurve. He was knocked out in the first round.
Jordan Vouroudis scored 134 and was ranked 3rd in barebow recurve. He made it to the bronze medal match, but was unfortunately eliminated.
