Sydney University remains undefeated at the top of the table in the Sydney Men’s AFL Premier Division, after comfortably defeating Campbelltown by 69 points at Monarch Oval on Saturday.
Uni have won all four matches to start the season, and sit on outright first on the ladder with 16 points after an impressive 17.13-115 to 6.10-46 win.
Coming off two nailbiting wins, the Campbelltown Blues found the going much tougher this week as they felt the full force of an on fire Sydney Uni forward line.
Uni opened strongly, kicking four goals to one to have a handy 18 point lead at the first change, 4.4-28 to 1.4-10. After the initial shellshock wore off however, Campbelltown hit their stride and were much improved in the second quarter to narrow the half time gap to just twelve.
That was as close as the Blues got, however, as Uni tore the game open in the third term with seven goals, opening up a 44 point three quarter time buffer.
Uni continued their assault until the final siren, booting five goals to one in the final term to secure another big win for season 2008.
Alex Lee landed his third four goal haul in four matches, taking his season tally to 14, while Andrew Krafft kicked three and Matthew Wakelin, vice captain Joel Carr, and Aron Everett were the other multiple goalscorers with two each.
Christopher Clareborough, Nicholas Clark and Simon Nash were best on ground for the Students, whilst Matthew Keys and Luke Coughlan were solid performers for Campbelltown.
With Uni now officially the team to beat in the competition, they face a tough assignment this Saturday in a blockbuster fixture against last year’s third place getters Pennant Hills.
Coach Daniel Archer is pleased with his team’s strong start to the season: “We have been able to recruit good footballers into areas that we thought we needed to improve. That along with the maturation of members from last year’s senior list and some hard work is what has allowed us to start well.”
“We have the belief that we can match it with anyone in this competition; however the boys also understand that this season is very close and any team can win on the day. We just need to ensure that we turn up to play every weekend and give ourselves every chance to keep achieving good results.”
The centre bounce is at 2:10pm, this Saturday, May 3, at University Oval No.1.
The Reserves match begins at 12:00pm, with the side coming off an incredible 27.17-179 to 0.5-5 win over Campbelltown Reserves last weekend.
