Sydney University has roared back into finals contention in the NSW Super League after dishing out a 4-1 hammering to the 3rd placed Fraser Park Dragons at Uni Oval No.1 on Sunday.
Continuing their run of solid showings against top opposition, Uni amassed their highest goal tally of the season in their best performance of the year, converting a 2-0 halftime lead into a comprehensive Round 9 victory.
Uni now sit just two wins outside the finals placings with a game in hand, and will be looking to make it two wins in a row next week against bottom placed Fairfield City Lions.
This week though, Uni were in rare form as they dominated a classy Fraser Park outfit. Looking to maintain an unbeaten run at Uni Oval No.1, Uni took the lead on 9 minutes through a James Alcorn strike, before Aaron Kidd doubled the advantage 10 minutes later.
Up by two at halftime, Uni showed no signs of slowing down in the second term as Mike Karagianos made it 3-0 fifteen minutes into the period, effectively ending the match as a contest.
Fraser Park quickly counter attacked however, and within a minute of Uni’s third had pulled a goal back through Koji Sasaki.
Uni remained unruffled however, as James Alcorn netted his second goal of the day to ice the game in injury time, and provide a boost to the Uni goal difference.
Fraser Park Dragons coach Alex Augusto praised the Students’ performance, “No excuses, we lost and we lost badly. I told the players that Uni would be a hard game because they are looking for points. We had our chances and well done to Uni.”
Uni coach Bruce Tilt was delighted that his young side continues to punch above their weight, “I’m very happy indeed, they’re another top-three team we have taken the game to. I think we surprised them with how strong we were. We are certainly making Uni our domain.”
“The oldest guy out there for us was 23 years old. We have players who can do a lot of different things, we don’t fear anybody, we play the football and don’t worry about the opposition. The boys are really maturing and enjoy learning from the changes in formation we are trying out at the moment. We’ll get better as the season goes on”
Kickoff this week against Fairfield City is at Norford Park No.2, at 7:30pm on Saturday night.
