The Sydney University Women’s Rugby team has fallen one game short of winning the Jack Scott Memorial Trophy with a tight 10-0 loss to Warringah in the Grand Final on Saturday.

It was always going to be tough against the minor premiers, who have only conceded 24 points and lost one match all season, and the Students put in a brave effort. Premiers for their fourth straight year, Warringah scored a massive 664 points in 15 competition rounds this season. Sydney University was the only team to beat the Rats this season with a 12-5 victory three weeks earlier.

After surviving two weeks of sudden death finals, a 49-5 defeat of Canterbury and then a 16-7 win over higher placed Parramatta, Sydney University came into the final in good form. Captain Rachelle Pirie, playing in her fourth Grand Final in nine years, was seeking her first taste of premiership glory.

Some of Australia’s best women’s rugby talent was on display in the match, with a Warringah team peppered with Sevens stars and dual-internationals, and a Sydney University side with three members of the 2006 World Cup squad, three current Wallaroos squad members, a Japanese international and eight players who represented Sydney in the 2008 National Championship.

Unfortunately, Warringah was too strong on the day and Sydney University could not repeat their earlier upset.
