Universities First Grade XI overcame the loss of three NSW representatives to account for St George-Sutherland in their Round 2 Sydney women’s grade competition limited overs encounter at Glenn McGrath Oval on Sunday.

Serena Liu (67), Qanita Jalil (49) and Maisy Gibson (33) stepped up to the plate to help the Students to 5-221 in reply to St George-Sutherland’s 6-220 off 50 overs.

Gibson turned in a fine all-round performance by snaring 2-34, while opener Cailyn Fountain was the star off the losing team, cracking 103 not out off 136 deliveries, including nine boundaries.

Universities Firsts opened their season with a 10-wicket win over Penrith.

Meanwhile, Parramatta Seconds collected the points against Universities Seconds at Merrylands Oval on Sunday, when they amassed 8-241 off 50 overs before rumbling Universities for 191 off 49.1 overs.

Universities Seconds lost their Round 1 match to Bankstown by seven wickets.

While the grade sides were doing battle on Sunday, Alex Blackwell, Rachel Haynes and Georgie Redmayne were involved in a nail-baiting, one run loss to South Australia in their limited overs clash played at the WACA Ground in Perth.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, South Australian Scorpions amassed 5-281 off 50 overs, with Sarah Taylor’s 101 off 103 balls the highlight of the innings, along with Bridgett Patterson’s 72 and Lauren Ebsary’s 72 not out.

NSW skipper Blackwell had the Breakers on target for victory with an innings of 118 not out off 139 balls, but they fell one run short, finishing with 7-280 off 50 overs.
