Medals keep rolling in

Graham Croker

While athletes, swimmers and fencers continued to add to Sydney University’s medal – and points – tally at the 2010 Australian University Games in Perth, the University’s rowers entered the fray with a vengeance on day three.

Gold medals came Sydney University’s way at the athletics through Annabel Davies in the women’s hammer, Jo Waring in the women’s heptathlon and Alix Kennedy in the women’s discus. Silver medals were won by James Dooley in the men’s 400m and the women’s 4x400m relay, while Davies also collected a bronze medal in the women’s discus.

Sydney University’s fencers continued to perform well at the Games with John Chow winning gold in the men’s sabre and Nick Davies collecting the bronze medal in the same event.

While at the swimming centre, gold medals were won by Megan Ramsay in the women’s 200m breaststroke, Emma Gray in the women’s 50m freestyle, Matt Jaukovic in the men’s 50m butterfly, and Sam McConnell, Tim Halliday, Dylan Curtis and Gordon Willis in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay.

Silver medals were won by McConnell in the 50m butterfly, and Emma Gray, Christine Kidd, Megan Ramsay, Jess Cerni in the women’s 4x100m freestyle.

Sydney University also collected bronze medals through Gordon Willis in the men’s 50m freestyle and Megan Ramsay in the women’s 400m freestyle.

The swimming team heads the overall pointscore on 244.5, ahead of Monash University (207.5) and the University of Queensland (120.5).

Meanwhile, the teams events are reaching the business end of the Games, with most finals set down for Friday.

Sydney University teams will be defending gold medals from the 2009 AUG in women’s water polo, women’s softball and open baseball, along with the overall men’s rowing, overall women’s rowing and the overall University Rowing Championship for the NSW Centenary Cup.
