Golden day in Perth

Sydney University athletes came away with 10 gold, four silver and seven bronze medals on day two of competition at the 2010 Australian University Games being held in Perth.

With many individual events being finalised, the medals came in swimming, athletics and fencing as the strong Sydney University team made a solid start in their quest to finish with the overall team pointscore title.

At the fencing championships, Margarita Sokolovskaja  won gold in the women’s foil and women’s sabre, Nick Davies won silver in the men’s foil and David Jin won bronze in the men’s foil in a solid start to the Games.

Sydney University Athletics Club coach Dean Gleeson said the club had entered one of its strongest teams on record, and the day two results confirmed that claim with gold medals to Lachlan Chisholm in the men’s 1500m, Andrew Giltrap in the men’s javelin, Derek Mulhern in the men’s 5000m walk and Lauren Bourke in the women’s 5000m walk.

Silver medals were won by Larissa Pasternatsky in the women’s 100m and Andrew Giltrap in the men’s hammer, while bronze medals went to Siobhan Clayton in the women’s 1500m, Ronan Casey in the men’s 1500m, Freya Wilson in the women’s 3000m steeplechase and Andrew Clarke in the men’s 100m.

At the swimming complex, Sydney University swimmers spent as much time on the dais as in the water on day two of competition. Gold medals went to Megan Ramsey in the women’s 200m individual medley, Emma Gray in the women’s 100m butterfly, Sam McConnell in the men’s 100m butterfly and Matt Jaukovic, James Etter, Sam McConnell and Gordon Willis in the men’s 4x100m medley relay.

Isabella Stephenson, Kegan Ramsey, Emma Gray and Jess Cerni won silver in the women’s 4x100m medley relay, while bronze medals were won by Megan Ramsey in the women’s 50m backstroke and Matt Jaukovic in the men’s 100m butterfly.

Sydney University led the swimming pointscore at the end of day two.
