UNSW Wests Magpies won the men’s National Water Polo League title for 2019 with a tight 9-7 result over Drummoyne Devils at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Sunday.

It was the Magpies fifth title since entering the national league.

Drummoyne Devils were minor premiers on 65 points at the end of the 18-game season proper, with UNSW Wests Magpies (65), Fremantle Mariners (47), Hunter Hurricanes (45), Sydney University (37) and Queensland Thunder (30) making up the top six.

Defending premiers Sydney University won their preliminary final 14-6 over Hunter Hurricanes, but lost their semi-final 15-10 to Drummoyne Devils. Fremantle Mariners then accounted for the Students 16-7 in the play-off for third and fourth.

The women’s national league was won by Queensland Thunder in their first season in the competition.

The Thunder accounted for Fremantle Marlins 10-9 in a cliff-hanger at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Sunday.

Sydney University finished fifth on the ladder that was headed by UTS Balmain Tigers on 64 points, with UNSW Wests Killer Whales (55),Queensland Thunder (52), Fremantle Marlins (41), Sydney University (33) and ACU Cronulla Sharks making up the top six.

The Students lost their preliminary final 8-6 to Fremantle Mariners, before defeating Cronulla Sharks 14-13 in the play-off for fifth and sixth.

Semi-Final: Drummoyne Devils 15 (Blake Edwards 5, Nicholas Brooks 3, Lachlan Edwards 2, Aidan Roach, Mitchell Emery, Tyler Martin, Marko Marceta, Adam Hall) defeated Sydney University Lions 10 (James Butcher 3, Thomas Kearns 3, Goran Tomasevic, Scott Nicholson, Chris Dyson, Michael Rosenthal) at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Saturday.

Grand Finals (1 v 2): UNSW Wests Magpies 9 defeated Drummoyne Devils 7 at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Sunday.

Grand Finals (3 v 4): Fremantle Mariners 16 (Luke Pavillard 4, Jordan Kremers-Taylor 4, Peta Tomasevic 3, Joel Swift 2, Tom Prior, Clancy Neesham, James Fannon) defeated Sydney University 7 (James Butcher 2, Goran Tomasevic, Scott Nicholson, Will Cotterill, Raphael Pirat, Keegan Wicken) at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Sunday.

 

Women

Preliminary Final: Fremantle Mariners 8 (Pia Rodgers 3, Sofia Chaves 2, Kelly Parks, Chloe Nella, Zoe Arancini) defeated Sydney University Lions 6 (Isobel Bishop 2, Danielle Morrissey, Holly Young, Zsofia Polak, Sienna Green) at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Friday night.

Semi-Final: Sydney University Lions 14 (Isobel Bishop 4, Zsofia Polak 3, Danielle Morrissey 2, Holly Young 2, Mia Willows, Emma Lewis, Lauren Brennan) defeated ACU Cronulla Sharks 13 (Kiara Holden 4, Marloes Cabout 3, Brooke McLean 3, Pinky Rewi-Henry 2, Brittany Tait) at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Saturday.

Grand Finals (1 v 2): Queensland Thunder 10defeated Fremantle Marlins 9 at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Sunday.

Grand Finals (3 v 4): UNSW Wests Killer Whales 11 defeated UTS Balmain Tigers 7 at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Sunday.
