30-7-2008: Dynamic Sydney University flanker Phil Waugh has been recalled to the run-on XV when Australia takes on New Zealand in Saturday’s Tri-Nations Test in Auckland.
With Rocky Elsom injured, Wallaby coach Robbie Deans has opted for Waugh as his replacement to play his 68th Test. Waugh’s selection means Australia will field two open-side flankers, with Australian vice-captain George Smith on the other side of the scrum.
“They’re two quality players,” Deans said of Waugh and Smith. “It’s good to get both of them on the ground.”
Waugh has been on the bench for the past five Tests, but has been included in the run-on side to help negate the influence of All Black flanker Richie McCaw, who is also returning from injury.
Waugh has had a stellar season, captaining the NSW Waratahs to the final of the Super 14 competition and making the most of his run-on duties for the Wallabies.
Sydney University will also be represented in Auckland by second-rower Dan Vickerman, who has been selected on the bench. With 52 Test caps to his credit, he is sure to be utilised by Deans at some point in the encounter.
