Western Suburbs collected first innings points in their round three, two-day match against Sydney University at Pratten Park on Saturday.

A 120-run, fourth wicket partnership between Nicholas Cutler and Alec Baldwin sealed the deal for Western Suburbs as they cruised to 4-258 in reply to Sydney University’s 8(dec)-257.

Day two was always going to be a tough one for the Students after skipper Nick Larkin decided to declare late on day one to have a few overs at the hosts. They went to stumps at 0-18 and took that to 60 before leg-spinner Devlin Malone removed opener Isaac Taylor, caught behind by Tim Cummins.

Joe Kershaw removed his opening partner Ned Eckersley two runs later, also snared by Cummins, and at 2-62 the Students were momentarily back in the hunt.

But the patient Cutler dug in for an unbeaten 73 off 153 deliveries, while Baldwin posted 69 off 117 balls to guide the hosts home.

There was better news in the Second Grade ranks at University Oval, where the hosts claimed outright points in a declaration driven run chase.

Day one saw Western Suburbs win the toss and bat, a decision they came to rue when were all out for 152. Sydney University went to stumps at 1-135 with Steven Hobson unbeaten on 66 and Jack Holloway on 55.

Hobson went on to post 105 not out, his ninth century for the club, as the Students declared at 3-186.

Western Suburbs took the initiative and declared their second innings closed at 8-203 on the back of a quick-fire 100 not out from Samuel McMahon.

Chasing 170 for victory, the Students got home with five wickets down thanks to skipper Ben Larkin’s 50 not out and a 45-run contribution from opener Charles Litchfield.

Western Suburbs earned first innings points in Third and Fifth grades, while Sydney University claimed a first innings win in Fourth Grade. They were staring at outright points with Wests 9-110 in their second innings when stumps were drawn.
