Sydney Uni Wrestling & Grappling were well represented at the Australian National Championships for Wrestling, an event which is the first stage of the Olympic selection criteria for Tokyo 2020.

The Club enjoyed a number of noteworthy outcomes include two bronze, four silver and two gold medals, with which came National Champions.

Club members Jayden Lawrence and Ethan Thomas will be promoted to the next round of competitions and trials to vie for a position in the shadow team, which will then be decided upon to represent Australia at next year’s Games.

The story of the weekend is Ethan’s, who after five years, participated in his second National competition.

The 24-year-old elite athlete (and Head Jiu Jitsu Coach) secured the gold by unseating the previous champion of the past seven years at 74 kg, a huge feat considering the odds were against him.

In the match itself, he returned from an eight-point deficit to answer with a lead by the end of the 2nd period, therefore winning the match.

Congratulations to Ethan and the Club.
